Outdoor Advice: Outsmart Insects
You may be one of the many people who are trying to make more thoughtful choices for how you spend your free time. Outdoor recreation is increasing in popularity, as more people find leisure time activities that provide exercise or educational benefits.
Of course, whenever taking up a new hobby or activity, especially one that involves being exposed to an unfamiliar environment, you may become aware of obstacles or inconveniences you didn’t predict. Those who haven’t spent a great deal of time outdoors in the past may have underestimated the potential difficulties of dealing with ticks and insects. Avoiding insect and tick bites is about more than assuring a comfortable experience, it’s also about safety. Insects like mosquitoes can spread a number of diseases. Deer ticks (which, despite their name, will bite humans also) are well known carriers of Lyme disease.
There are two basic ways to protect yourself from insects and ticks. They are most effective when used in conjunction with one another. The first is to physically cover your skin. Long sleeves, and long pants provide a barrier that protects your skin. The second is to wear an effective commercial insect repellent. By combining these two methods, the danger and the discomfort associated with ticks and insects outdoors can be thoroughly addressed.
